Subway debuted three new “sidekicks” recently, the footlong chocolate chip cookie, a footlong churro and a footlong pretzel. Are any of them vegan? We give you that answer plus ingredient lists for each here!
The chocolate chip cookie is Subway’s recipe while the churro is Cinnabon’s and the pretzel is from Auntie Anne’s.
We’re going to go through each of them one by one.
Is Subway’s Footlong Chocolate Chip Cookie Vegan?
No. Subway’s footlong chocolate chip cookie is NOT vegan. You will see in the ingredient list that the cookie contains a couple of cow-based dairy products and egg. There are a couple of other ingredients that we would not be able to find out its origins so if this cookie did not contain dairy and egg, it could have potentially been “accidentally vegan.”
According to Subway, here are the ingredients for the footlong chocolate chip cookie:
FOOTLONG COOKIE, CHOCOLATE CHIP: Enriched wheat flour (wheat flour, contains 0.5% or less of: niacin, iron, ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, enzyme, folic acid), Semi-sweet chocolate chips (sugar, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, natural flavor, milk), Sugar, Palm Oil margarine (palm oil, water, salt, monoglycerides, citric acid, beta carotene [color], Vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D3), Eggs, Invert sugar, butter (cream[milk]), Contains 2% or less of: Wheat starch, Molasses, Baking soda, Soy lecithin, Salt, Natural flavor. Contains Eggs, Milk, Soy, Wheat.
Is Subway’s Footlong Churro Vegan?
No. Subway’s footlong churro, by Cinnabon, is NOT vegan. The ingredient list includes eggs and dairy. The egg are in a few iterations while dairy is the sodium caseinate. You can see the ingredient list here:
FOOTLONG CHURRO: Wheat Starch, Vegetable Oil (Contains One or More of the Following: Canola Oil, Cottonseed Oil, Palm Oil), Water, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Yellow Corn Flour, Contains 2% or Less of the Following: Sodium Caseinate, Eggs, Cinnamon, Egg Whites, Egg Yolks, Guar Gum, Leavening (Baking Soda, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate), Mono-and Diglycerides, Propylene Glycol Mono- And Diesters of Fatty Acids, Salt, Soy Lecithin, Sugar. Cinnamon Packet: Sugar, Cinnamon. Contains Egg, Milk, Soy, Wheat.
Is Subway’s Footlong Pretzel Vegan?
No. Subeay’s footlong pretzel, by Auntie Anne’s, is NOT vegan. The ingredient list is the most clean and simple; however, it does contain dairy in the form of cream.
What’s disappointing is that Auntie Anne’s pretzels can be made vegan when visiting one of their locations. You do have to special order it to be vegan but it is an option. Too bad they couldn’t create one dairy-free for Subway.
According to Subway, here are the ingredients for the footlong pretzel:
FOOTLONG PRETZEL: Wheat Flour, Water, Brown Sugar, Soybean Oil, Yeast, Salt, Cream, Natural and Artifical Flavorings. CONTAINS: Wheat, Milk.
In Conclusion…
Not one of Subway’s “sidekicks” is vegan or can be modified to be vegan. If that puts you in the mood to get Subway either way, you can see all of their vegan options in our Vegan Guide for Subway.
